Three generations of family in McLean. Independent, experienced, and ready to help the MCC do even more — without raising your taxes.
"It's your Community Center — and you pay for it."
Martin Smith has called McLean home since 1972 — and now his son's family carries on that tradition here too, with two grandchildren growing up in the community Martin has always loved.
He has served on the McLean Citizens Association Board since 2016, previously as Trustee of the McLean Community Foundation, and has been a civic volunteer throughout his life in McLean. He brings real governance experience — and genuine affection for this community — to his candidacy.
Martin runs as an independent — no slate, no party agenda, no obligations except to the residents of the MCC tax district. He believes the MCC has done wonderful work over its 50+ years and wants to build on that success with practical fresh ideas.
Three strategic priorities — drawn from decades of civic engagement and a lifelong commitment to making McLean a great place for families.
As McLean's downtown transforms to a denser, more residential model, Martin will work to ensure that the MCC campus — including the Library and Central Park — is integrated into the County's Community Business Center (CBC) Plan. That means persuading those shaping the future of McLean--the MRC, MPC, MCA and Fairfax County officials--that the MCC should be "the Center of it all."
Too many McLean residents don't know what the MCC offers — or don't feel it's for them. Martin will push for data-driven outreach to those residents, fuller use of the Center's extensive facilities, and more ways for residents to shape what the MCC offers.
Martin's commitment: no increase to the 2.3¢/$100 special property tax rate. New services get funded by charging fees where appropriate (like childcare), pursuing grants, and regularly reviewing program pricing so the lowest-priority offerings can be replaced with higher-value ones.
The McLean Citizens Association helped build the Community Center — donating land and lending its name to the Alden Theater through past president Bob Alden. Martin has served on the MCA Board since 2016 and will make strengthening this partnership a top priority on the Governing Board.
